Blog 15: Facebook

What is the purpose of Facebook now? It started as a means of connecting people outside their social groups. We could now be in contact with people we would have never seen again before the website. Personally, I did not have a Facebook site until college and only joined because of peer pressure. Now, I find myself on it at least once a day. But what is the market doing with sites like Facebook and MySpace pages? Companies no longer have to step outside their office to figure out the interests of their intended audience. These sites contain so much personal information that the media can now maximize their time attracting specific people interested in their products. Companies have jumped on the chance to market their products and cut out wasted time bothering people who are uninterested in their sales. All age groups and generations have personal sites like these and are still growing in population each day. We now see different tools and advertisements on the side when logging into our accounts. It is important to be careful of what information we are putting out on the Internet because it can be easily accessed by anyone.

Clearly the purpose of Facebook is to allow college students to procrastinate on assignments while mindlessly stalking their friends 24/7. Okay cynical thoughts aside I can't help but fear that Facebook will become a tool of advertisers in a desire to make money. I notice that advertisements appear based on what you note as interests in your profile. With personalized advertisements I wonder what the next step will be?

REDSKINS vs. RAVENS TODAY!!! Anyways.. It sucks that something that’s so enjoyable like Facebook has become something we have to be afraid of. Where do you cross the line between privacy? I don’t think there is one as long as we have the government. Would you rather have Facebook shut down or Facebook get more strict?

You only got facebook in college? Oh my goodness I was hooked sophomore year of high school...you were one of the lucky few to get out of it's evil snares. I agree people put up way too much of their personal lives on facebook...like the emo status my brother puts up. I agree with Matthew...facebook is becoming a big tool. There are advertisements that are based on what you put on your profile. For instance I said I like the band "Queen" and now there are all these classic rock concert ads on facebook, it's sick.

I agree Facebook could definitely be a danger to our privacy. Our information is available to so many people that we do not even know. Hopefully our privacy settings are working....

I agree with you. What each person uses Facebook for, and what they believe its purpose is will never be the same. But one thing all of Facebook's users have in common is that they are all being exploited for the gains of the company. What once was innocent can now cause more harm than we might have originally thought.

First of all...Go Redskins!!! I kind of see facebook as a remediation of the yearbook. I didn't have facebook until college either, but I think it is cool how you can keep in touch with your friends that you haven't seen since middle school. Other than that, my aunt and uncle have an account and they say they use it for work.
